The cost of living in Wrocław is lower than in Warsaw on average, but your budget still depends mostly on rent, which varies a lot by district and flat size. This guide gives you the official figures that do exist (local wages, inflation, transport fares, health cover) and a template to fill in with your own numbers.

As in our Warsaw guide, we don’t publish an “average rent” or “price of a coffee”. Those numbers change by the month and by the street, and a made-up average is worse than none. Instead, we tell you where to check.

Is Wrocław expensive?

Not by Western European standards. Poland’s price level for household consumption was 70.2 in 2024, where the EU average is 100 (Eurostat). Wrocław is a large, popular city, so housing costs more than in smaller Polish towns, but day-to-day services and food are well below EU-average prices.

Prices are rising, though. Consumer prices in Poland were 4.1% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier: services rose 5.3% and goods 3.6% (GUS). Keep that in mind when you negotiate salary or sign a long lease.

Start with what you’ll earn

Your budget starts with your net salary. Check whether an offer is an employment contract (gross salary) or B2B (net on the invoice, before your own tax and contributions). Our tax guide explains the difference, and the salary after tax calculator shows your take-home pay.

For context on local pay across all jobs:

  • City of Wrocław: the average gross monthly wage was PLN 10,147.90 in 2025, 8.3% above the national average on the same basis, according to the GUS Local Data Bank (GUS BDL). These local figures leave out the smallest firms.
  • Dolnośląskie region: the average gross wage was PLN 8,359.59 in 2024, against PLN 9,488.94 in Mazowieckie (Warsaw) and PLN 8,249.31 in Małopolskie (Kraków) (GUS).

Tech pay is well above these averages. On 16 October 2026, jobs in Wrocław listed 191 English-speaking tech roles at 31 companies, including 55 Python jobs and 50 Java jobs. Our salary guide has official pay data for developers.

Rent in Wrocław

Rent is the biggest cost for most people. What you pay depends on:

  • District. The Old Town (Stare Miasto) and areas close to it cost more. Newer estates further out are often cheaper per square metre but mean longer commutes.
  • Distance to your office and a tram line. Check where your office is before choosing a district; a cheaper flat can cost you an hour a day.
  • Building type. New-build flats usually cost more than older pre-war or communist-era blocks of the same size.

How to research average rent in Wrocław

  1. Compare several live listings on the main Polish rental portals for the district and flat size you want. Look at 10 or more, not one or two.
  2. Check what’s included. Polish listings often show the rent plus a separate monthly building charge (czynsz administracyjny) and utilities (media: heating, water, electricity). Ask for the total.
  3. Budget for a deposit (kaucja) and an agency fee if you use an agent. Ask how much each is before viewing.
  4. Ask what type of lease it is. Some landlords offer najem okazjonalny, a lease type that needs extra paperwork from you, including a notarised statement. Ask what it involves and who pays the notary.

Before you sign

  • Can you register your address there? Non-EU citizens must register within 4 days of arriving and EU citizens within 30 days, with the owner’s confirmation or your lease (gov.pl).
  • Is there an English version of the lease? Ask for one, or have it translated.
  • What are the notice period and the rules for returning the deposit?

Consider short-term housing for your first month. It gives you time to visit districts at rush hour before you commit. Our relocation checklist covers the other first steps.

Getting around: Wrocław public transport

Wrocław’s trams and buses are run by MPK Wrocław. Current fares for all lines, normal tickets (wroclaw.pl):

Ticket Price
Single ride PLN 4.60
60 minutes PLN 5.20
24 hours PLN 15.00
7 days PLN 54.00
30 days, all lines PLN 110.00
90 days, all lines PLN 302.00
30 days, Nasz Wrocław PLN 90.00
90 days, Nasz Wrocław PLN 240.00

The Nasz Wrocław prices are for residents who pay their income tax in Wrocław. Reduced fares, at half these prices, apply to eligible groups; check whether you qualify. The tariff has applied since 1 September 2021, so check the city site for any update.

If you choose your flat with transport in mind, you can live in Wrocław without a car.

Health care

  • Employees and sole traders are covered by the public National Health Fund (NFZ) through mandatory contributions.
  • If you’re not insured through work or a business, voluntary NFZ insurance cost at least PLN 845.67 a month for July to September 2026. It’s recalculated each quarter (NFZ).
  • Foreign students from outside the EU can insure voluntarily with NFZ for PLN 55.80 a month (NFZ).

Many tech employers add a private medical package. Our guide to NFZ vs Luxmed and Medicover explains what each covers.

Wrocław vs Warsaw and Kraków cost of living

  • Wages: Warsaw’s region has the highest average wages in Poland. Dolnośląskie (Wrocław) and Małopolskie (Kraków) are close to each other, both well below Mazowieckie (figures above).
  • Jobs: Warsaw had 1,069 English-speaking tech jobs on our board in October 2026, Kraków 488 and Wrocław 191 (October 2026 report). Wrocław has fewer jobs but less competition for flats than the capital.
  • Rent: check live listings for each city with the same flat size and commute. That’s the only fair comparison.

Wrocław vs Prague cost of living

At country level, the Czech Republic’s price level for household consumption was 80.2 in 2024 and Poland’s 70.2 (EU = 100), so prices are generally lower in Poland (Eurostat). Capital cities cost more than national averages, so Prague’s premium over Wrocław is likely to be larger than the national gap. Compare rents directly before deciding.

Is Wrocław a good place to live?

That’s personal, but here’s what the data says for tech workers: it’s Poland’s fourth-largest English-speaking tech job market on our board (after Warsaw, Kraków and Katowice in October 2026), local wages are above the national average, and you can get around without a car. If you want more choice of employers, see tech jobs beyond Warsaw and Kraków, or keep your options open with remote jobs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average rent in Wrocław?

We don’t publish one figure, because rents depend heavily on district, flat size, building age and month. Compare 10 or more live listings for the flat you want, ask for the total including the building charge and utilities, and budget for a deposit plus any agency fee.

Is Wrocław cheaper than Warsaw?

On average, yes. Average wages are lower in Wrocław’s region than in Warsaw’s (PLN 8,359.59 against PLN 9,488.94 gross a month in 2024), and rents generally follow wages. Tech salaries don’t fall by the same amount, so compare real offers and real listings for both cities.

How much is a monthly tram and bus ticket in Wrocław?

A 30-day ticket for all MPK Wrocław lines costs PLN 110. If you pay your income tax in Wrocław, the Nasz Wrocław version costs PLN 90. A 90-day ticket is PLN 302, or PLN 240 under Nasz Wrocław. A single ride is PLN 4.60.

What does it cost to live in Wrocław as an international student?

Your main costs are rent, food, transport and health insurance. Students from outside the EU can insure with NFZ for PLN 55.80 a month, and reduced MPK fares at half price apply to eligible groups, so check whether your student status qualifies. Check your university’s guidance for housing in student dormitories.

Are prices in Poland still rising?

Yes. Consumer prices were 4.1% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier, according to Statistics Poland (GUS). Services rose 5.3% and goods 3.6%. These are national figures, not Wrocław-specific ones.
