The cost of living in Kraków depends mostly on one thing: rent. Transport, food and bills are modest next to a typical tech salary, but rent varies so much by district and flat size that one “average” figure would mislead you. So this guide gives you the official numbers that do exist, our own salary data and a budget template you can fill in.

In short: a resident’s monthly transport pass costs PLN 99 with Karta Krakowska (ZTP Kraków), consumer prices in Poland were 4.1% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier (GUS), and the average gross wage in Kraków was PLN 11,404.02 a month in 2025 (GUS Local Data Bank).

Prices change quickly. Check the official links before you sign a lease or accept an offer.

Start with your take-home pay

Your budget starts with your net salary. On Poland Dev Jobs, the median advertised salary in Kraków was PLN 237,500 a year in our October 2026 report, from 52 ads that stated one. The usual range ran from PLN 132,000 to PLN 424,000.

Here’s what those amounts leave each month under the 2026 rules, from our salary after tax calculator:

Yearly gross Monthly net on an employment contract (UoP) Monthly net on B2B with 12% ryczałt
PLN 132,000 PLN 7,829 PLN 7,309
PLN 237,500 (Kraków median) PLN 12,456 PLN 15,046
PLN 427,000 PLN 21,295 PLN 28,318

UoP figures are yearly averages; your payslips will be higher early in the year and lower once you pass PLN 120,000 of income. B2B figures assume full ZUS and no costs. See what 15k, 20k and 30k PLN take home for the month-by-month detail, and B2B vs UoP if you’re comparing contract types.

For context, the national minimum wage in 2026 is PLN 4,806 a month (Dz.U. 2025 poz. 1242).

Is Kraków expensive?

Compared with local wages, Kraków isn’t cheap for people on average pay, but a typical tech salary goes a long way. Two official numbers help:

  • Wages: Kraków’s average gross wage of PLN 11,404.02 a month in 2025 was close to Warsaw’s PLN 11,677.57 and above Wrocław’s PLN 10,147.90 (GUS Local Data Bank). Landlords and shops price for that local market.
  • Prices: consumer prices in Poland rose 4.1% in the year to September 2026. Services rose 5.3% and goods 3.6% (GUS). These are national figures; GUS doesn’t publish a separate Kraków inflation rate.

Eating out is a service, so it’s in the faster-rising group. If you’re comparing with Warsaw, read our Kraków vs Warsaw vs Wrocław guide and the cost of living in Warsaw.

Rent in Kraków

Rent is the biggest line in most budgets, and it’s where you have the most control.

What drives the price

  • District. Kraków has 18 districts (dzielnice). The historic centre and nearby areas are the most in demand; districts further out usually cost less but mean a longer commute.
  • Distance to your office and a tram line. Offices are spread across the city, so living near yours or on a direct tram route can matter more than living centrally.
  • Flat size and condition. New buildings and furnished flats cost more.
  • The time of year. Kraków is a big university city, so expect more competition for flats before the academic year starts in October.

How to research rents

  • Compare live listings for the districts you’re considering on the main rental portals. Look at several flats of the size you want, not one.
  • Ask what’s included. Polish listings often separate the rent paid to the owner from the building charges (czynsz administracyjny) and utilities (electricity, gas, heating, water, internet). Ask for the total monthly cost.
  • Budget for a deposit and an agency fee if you use an agent. Ask about both before you view.
  • Watch the trend: flat prices in Poland rose 6.3% year on year in the second quarter of 2026 (GUS). Higher purchase prices tend to push rents up over time.

Before you sign

  • Can you register your address there? Non-EU citizens must register within 4 days of arriving, and EU citizens within 30 days (gov.pl). You’ll need your lease or the owner’s confirmation. Registering in Kraków also helps you get Karta Krakowska (see below).
  • Is the lease in a language you understand? Ask for an English translation.
  • What’s the notice period, and how is the deposit returned?

Consider short-term housing for your first few weeks, so you can see districts and commutes before you commit.

Getting around: Kraków transport costs

Kraków’s trams and buses are run by the city’s transport authority (ZTP). Fares from ZTP Kraków:

Ticket Price (normal fare)
30-minute or one-ride ticket (zones I+II+III) PLN 6
60-minute ticket PLN 8
24-hour ticket, zone I PLN 20
Monthly resident’s pass, zone I (with Karta Krakowska) PLN 99
Six-month resident’s pass, zone I PLN 515
Monthly Bilet Metropolitalny, zone I PLN 193

Karta Krakowska is the city’s residents’ status. You can get it if you’re registered for permanent residence in Kraków or you file your income tax with a Kraków tax office (ZTP Kraków). It roughly halves the cost of a monthly pass, so it’s worth doing as soon as you’ve registered. Ask your employer whether they also subsidise transport.

Many people in central Kraków live without a car and walk, cycle or take the tram.

Health care

  • Employees on UoP are covered by public health insurance (NFZ) through their job, and B2B sole traders through their own health contribution.
  • If you’re not insured through work or a business, voluntary NFZ insurance cost at least PLN 845.67 a month for July to September 2026 (NFZ). It’s recalculated every quarter, so check NFZ for the current rate. If you were uninsured for a while before signing up, NFZ may charge a one-off extra fee.
  • Private medical care is a common job benefit. Check whether your offer includes it and whether it covers your family.
